You've seen it on our Oil and Lotion labels: "pure Zechstein Magnesium Chloride." Here's the actual story behind that name — and why it matters.
An Ancient Sea, 250 Million Years Ago
During the Permian period, roughly 250 million years ago, a vast inland sea called the Zechstein Sea stretched across what is now Northwestern Europe — spanning an area from eastern England to western Poland. It was connected to the ancient Tethys Ocean through narrow southern passages.
Over time, through natural evaporation cycles, the Zechstein Sea left behind thick layers of mineral deposits — evaporites — rich in magnesium chloride. Eventually, the sea disappeared entirely, and those mineral layers became sealed deep underground, preserved in a geological formation now found beneath the Netherlands and surrounding regions.
What's Actually Down There
The Zechstein deposit contains a naturally occurring mineral called Bischofite — magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl₂ · 6H₂O). It's mined from roughly two miles beneath the surface, in the Veendam region of the Netherlands, through a process called solution mining.
Why Its Age Matters
Here's what makes Zechstein genuinely distinct: it formed and was sealed underground millions of years before human industry existed. Unlike modern open bodies of water — which can be exposed to contemporary agricultural runoff, industrial activity, or other environmental factors — the Zechstein deposit has been isolated underground for a quarter of a billion years, untouched since it was first sealed away.
How It Compares to the Dead Sea
Both the Zechstein seabed and the Dead Sea are natural sources of magnesium chloride, but they're structurally different. The Zechstein deposit is a sealed, ancient geological formation accessed through mining. The Dead Sea, by contrast, is a living, present-day body of water — meaning it naturally carries a broader mineral profile (potassium, calcium, bromide, and more) from its ongoing evaporation process, which is exactly why we use Dead Sea salt separately in our Bath Soak's Triple Blend.
